After seven years leading one of Canada's most beloved magazine brands, Maureen Halushak will step down as editor-in-chief of Chatelaine on August 5, 2026, to pursue a new opportunity.
Halushak was named editor-in-chief in January 2019, returning to the magazine where she began her career more than two decades earlier. Under her leadership, Chatelaine won gold for Best Service & Lifestyle Magazine at the 2023 National Magazine Awards and earned a Best Magazine nomination again in 2026.
“Leading Chatelaine for the past seven years has been the highlight of my career,” says Halushak. “It was an honour to carry on the conversation that this iconic brand has been having with Canadian women for the past 97 years.”
Halushak led the brand's 95th anniversary in 2023 with a year-long celebration that included its Fall 2023 issue dedicated to menopause. She transformed the Women of the Year franchise into the Doris Anderson Awards, honouring Canadian women who share the tenacious spirit of the magazine’s most groundbreaking editor. In 2022, she established Chatelaine's Editorial Fellowship for Racialized Journalists. And this spring, she launched Group Chat, the brand's first podcast, alongside her team.
"Maureen insisted, always, that Chatelaine reflect the women it serves—honestly and inclusively," said Kyle Joe, VP of Content at SJC Media. "She is a thoughtful storyteller, a generous colleague and a fierce advocate for her team and for what matters. We'll miss her, and we wish her every success in her next chapter."
SJC is now searching for Chatelaine's next editor-in-chief to lead the brand into its next chapter. Learn more and apply.
