SJC and UHN Foundation today announced UHNITED For your health, a new breakfast speaker series featuring conversations with University Health Network clinicians, researchers and patients on health topics that matter to Canadians. SJC will host the series, with its media brands, including Maclean’s, Toronto Life and Chatelaine, inviting their audiences to attend and helping amplify the conversations through their channels. Each session will raise awareness of UHN Foundation’s work in supporting Canada’s #1 hospital and opportunities to be a part of the solution.

“UHN’s research and innovation are changing health care in Toronto and around the world, and we want more Canadians to know about that work,” says Tony Gagliano, CEO of SJC. “This series brings people together to hear about it firsthand, while our brands can help those conversations reach a wider audience. Launching this initiative is a fitting way to mark SJC’s 70th anniversary and continue our tradition of giving back and helping build strong communities.”

The first session, “Beyond Hospital Walls: Reimagining Health Care Through Prescribable Housing,” takes place on Wednesday, November 18, 2026. Dr. Andrew Boozary, Executive Director of UHN’s Gattuso Centre for Social Medicine, will be joined by Jason Miles, a resident of Dunn House, to discuss housing as a form of health care. Malcolm Johnston, editor-in-chief of Toronto Life will moderate.

Dunn House opened in 2024 as Canada’s first hospital-led supportive housing initiative, combining permanent housing with on-site health and social services. Early results among residents show a 52 per cent reduction in emergency department visits and a nearly 80 per cent reduction in hospital length of stay.

Building on the success of Dunn House and the in-development Spring House, the model’s first two phases, UHN’s social medicine housing initiative aims to create approximately 200 additional supportive and transitional housing units for medically and socially complex patients, with integrated health care and community supports. UHN Foundation is committing $20 million to the expansion.

“UHN Foundation helped UHN test a bold idea: that providing stable housing alongside health care can significantly improve outcomes for patients who have historically fallen through the cracks of both systems”, says Julie Quenneville, CEO, UHN Foundation. “Philanthropic investment enabled the innovation, evaluation, partnerships and clinical and research infrastructure needed to demonstrate the model’s impact and help it grow. We hope this conversation will inspire others to join us in supporting this initiative, and supporting Canada’s #1 hospital transform health care.”

The series is produced by Wonder, SJC’s events and experiential team. Future sessions on timely and important health topics will take place every two months.
