Today’s most successful retailers are evolving their flyer and digest programs into dynamic, mobile-first experiences that combine utility, inspiration and performance. With Canadian grocery prices continuing to rise, the weekly search for value has become a core planning ritual for shoppers.

Increasingly, that planning happens on mobile: 63% of Canadian shoppers use digital flyers to plan their shop, and 54% of household shoppers now read only or mostly digital flyers. For retailers, this shift presents a clear opportunity to meet customers where they already are.

A mobile-first shift

As a long-standing content partner for Walmart Canada, SJC worked closely with their team to evolve the seasonal digest program into a native mobile experience designed around observed mobile browsing behaviour.  Rather than simply adapting existing formats, the focus was on creating an intuitive vertical screen experience that keeps users engaged.

The impact

By shifting the design strategy to prioritize the mobile user, Walmart Canada’s results for a rolling six-month period in 2025 were significant, with measurable gains across reach, engagement and conversion:

  • Flyer Opens: +142% YoY
  • Clicks to walmart.ca: +384% YoY
  • Shopping List Adds: +158% YoY
  • Unique Engagements: +126% YoY
  • Impressions: +60% YoY
  • Average Item Views per Session: +12% YoY
  • Average Time Spent: +5% YoY

“The shift to a mobile-first strategy has been transformative, driving a big increase in engagement,” says Chayla Kirkland, Production Manager, Walmart Canada. “We commend SJC for their dedication to this process and for helping us produce a superior product that keeps our customers scrolling from start to finish.”

Bringing multiple SJC capabilities together

This work draws on several parts of SJC to support a year-round digest program:

  • Seasonal photography planned in advance to support volume, consistency, and timing
  • Automated workflows used to manage versioning across multiple digest iterations
  • Mobile-first design developed specifically for vertical browsing
  • Print, production and digital teams working together to support execution across channels
