We're thrilled to spotlight Girls Inc. of Durham, the 2024 recipient of the Giuseppina Gagliano Family Wellness Grant! This annual grant, honouring SJC's matriarch, empowers Canadian charities that make a profound difference in the lives of children and families. Each year, one selected charity receives a $2,000 donation and two advertising pages in SJC Media publications to raise awareness about their cause.
Uplifting girls
It’s especially fitting to announce this grant on March 8th, International Women's Day. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of uplifting girls and women everywhere and building a future where every girl has the opportunity to reach her full potential. Since 1984, Girls Inc. of Durham has been a guiding light for girls in the region, empowering them to overcome social and economic barriers. They offer a powerful blend of mentorship, a supportive pro-girl environment, and research-driven programming to foster strength, intelligence, and boldness in the young women they serve. Their unwavering commitment to building healthy, educated, and independent future leaders is making a positive impact on Durham Region and beyond.
A spotlight on mental health
Girls Inc. of Durham is using this International Women’s Day to raise awareness about girls’ mental health by introducing a new mental health toolkit. Each kit offers five hours of hands-on, research-backed activities, materials, and conversation starters. It focuses on four key areas: physical activity, nutrition, mental health and stress management, and self-esteem and body image. You can access the toolkit here.
