St. Joseph Communications’ industry-leading chain-of-custody program — ecomark — offers customers the benefits of the world’s three leading forest management programs: Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC).

The ecomark program not only reaffirms our commitment to protecting and replenishing the environment but also provides our customers with access to the broadest selection of environmentally friendly paper options and chain-of-custody certification programs in the industry.

The ecomark program continues St. Joseph Communications’ long-standing track record of environmental initiatives and best practices. In 2002, St. Joseph Communications became the first heatset web printer in North America to achieve FSC certification. In 2006, St. Joseph was the first to print on glossy 100% recycled Ancient Forest Friendly™ and FSC stock for explore magazine. In 2008, all of St. Joseph’s print facilities were certified for both PEFC and SFI .

Environmental stewardship is a fundamental component of St. Joseph Communications’ business philosophy. In 2006, St. Joseph worked with environmental organization Markets Initiative to become the first publisher/printer in Canada to introduce an Ancient Forest Friendly™ stewardship policy. Made from 100% post-consumer waste, AFF paper consumes no trees.
We share our commitment to the environment with our customers. Together, we will continue to work to identify new ways to make the most environmentally and economically sound choices for our collective futures.

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) sets forth principles, criteria and standards that span economic, social and environmental concerns. Like the forestry profession itself, the FSC system includes stakeholders with a diverse array of perspectives on what represents a well-managed and sustainable forest. FSC standards for forest management have now been applied in over 57 countries around the world.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI)
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist. This unique commitment to sustainable forestry recognizes that all forest landowners, not just SFI program participants, play a critical role in ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of our forests.

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC)
The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ schemes) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, founded in 1999, which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third-party certification. The PEFC is supported by 149 governments in the world covering 85% of the world’s forest area.
