SUMMARY:
St. Joseph Media is Canada's third largest magazine publisher with brands including award-winning titles such as Toronto Life, FASHION, Weddingbells, MARIAGE Québec, Where Canada magazines, Canadian Family and Quill & Quire.
The Designer will produce fresh, creative compositions on deadline and within the design guidelines of the magazine.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Creating and executing fresh and exciting layouts for the magazine
- Brainstorming with the art and edit team in conceptualizing vibrant editorial photography
- Integrating and maintaining the look and feel of the publication
- Working with the Editors and Art Department to develop strategies and solutions for stories and packages
- Verify the status of images for the magazine, check proofs for colour, liaise with retouchers and the Photo Editor to ensure quality control
- Occasionally help the Photo Editor acquire images
- Ensure all layouts are clean, pre-flighted and well-prepared for pre-press
- Coordinating workflow with all departments
- Some Photoshop work: clipping paths, colour correction and image retouching
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to produce fresh, creative compositions on deadline and within the design guidelines of the magazine
- A post-secondary degree or diploma in Applied Arts or Graphic Design
- First-rate knowledge of Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and other Mac design programs
- Attention to detail and consistency throughout the magazine
- Illustration and retouching skills are a bonus
- Previous editorial experience preferred, but not required
- Strong problem-solving skills
- High-level understanding of typography
- A passion for the city and culture and a knowledge of current trends in magazine design
